This Haynes repair and service manual covers 1982-2002 Honda CB600F and 2000-2002 Honda CB600FS Hornet motorcycles. Book Excerpt: 1998-2002 Honda CB600F, CB600FS Hornet Repair Manual ENGINE, CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION VALVE COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION NOTE: This procedure can be carried out with the engine in the frame. If the engine has been removed, ignore the steps that do not apply. REMOVAL. Remove the fuel tank (see Chapter 4) and, on CB600FS models, the fairing is required (see Chapter 8). Remove the ignition coils (see Chapter 5). Release the retaining clip and disconnect the breather hose from the right-hand end of the valve cover (see illustration).

Unscrew the bolts securing the valve cover and remove the bolts and their sealing washers (see illustration). Lift the cover off the cylinder head; if the cover is stuck, break the gasket seal by tapping gently around the edge with a soft-faced hammer or block of wood. Do not lever the cover off as this will damage the sealing surface. Remove the gasket. If required, undo the bolts retaining the breather battle plate and remove the plate (see illustration). Discard the gasket as a new one must be fitted on reassembly.

FRAME, SUSPENSION AND FINAL DRIVE GENERAL INFORMATION All models use a single spar backbone frame which incorporates the engine unit as a stressed member. The frame is constructed in box section steel. Front suspension is by a pair of oil-damped telescopic forks. At the rear, an aluminum, box-section swingarm acts on a single shock absorber. The shock absorber is adjustable for spring pre-load. The drive to the rear wheel is by chain.

FRAME INSPECTION AND REPAIR. The frame should not require attention unless accident damage has occurred.

In most cases, frame renewal is the only satisfactory remedy for such damage. A few frame specialists have the jigs and other equipment necessary for straightening the frame to the required standard of accuracy, but even then there is no simple way of assessing to what extent the frame may have been over stressed. On a high mileage bike, the frame should be examined closely for signs of cracking or splitting at the welded joints. Loose engine mount bolts can cause ovaling or fracturing of the mounting points. Minor damage can often be repaired by specialist welding, depending on the extent and nature of the damage. Remember that a frame which is out of alignment will cause handling problems. If misalignment is suspected as the result of an accident, it will be necessary to strip the machine completely so the frame can be thoroughly checked.
